David “Dave” Barry died at Casselholme on August 20, 2023 at the age of 88.
He is predeceased by his parents David Andrew and Beatrice Albertha (nee Renolds); his Sisters Arlie “Jean” Ellis (Arnold), and Ramona Smith (Athol); as well as two of his seven children - Darlene and Kevin.
Dave was the adoring husband and best friend of Isabelle “Belle” (nee Sunstrum). Their love for each other was deep, tender, and very sweet – an inspiration to the whole family. Both of them are small in stature, but giants in loving kindness. Sometimes the most beautiful things come in tiny packages.
Among his passions were all things related to transportation infrastructure, as reflected in his long career with the Ministry of Transportation. He shared this enthusiasm with family and friends, most especially Belle, with whom he took many road trips to visit loved ones in Canada and the US. He loved highways, cars, and trains, so much so that he and Belle would happily drive many hours just to have dinner somewhere new, or to deliver a family member to an airport or to a school in another province. Dave was a very generous man, an avid gardener, and an excellent cook – his famous stir-fry was a hit at every family dinner.
Dave leaves behind his sister Shirley Reid (Gary), whom he cherished.
He also leaves his treasured daughters: Patrice Barry (Christopher Easton), Pat Dufresne, Lorraine McDonald (Moe Albert), Cathy Lafond (Mike), and Anne Emond (Brian). They grieve his loss, but will forever celebrate his life and the love he gave to them.
Dave was a caring and funny - if sometimes endearingly grumpy - grandpa to 13, several of whom he very patiently taught to drive. He was great grandpa to 19, and great-great grandpa to 3.
Cremation has taken place. Per his wishes there will be no service. Online condolences can be made at www.hillsidefuneral.ca
If you would like another way to remember Dave and to celebrate his life, his family recommends that you take a long drive on new highways, or old country roads, with someone you love.
