George Hancharyk, MD
With deep sadness, the family of Dr. George Hancharyk, MD, of North Bay, Ontario, announces his passing on June 3, 2026, at the age of 91.
Born in Kenora, Ontario, in 1935 to Samuel and Amelia Hancharyk, George devoted his life to learning, service, and family. After studies at the University of Toronto, the University of Manitoba, and the University of Ottawa, he graduated from medical school in 1962 and moved to North Bay in 1964, where he cared for patients for more than 40 years as a general practitioner and anesthetist at St. Joseph Hospital and the Civic Hospital. George will be remembered for his sharp mind, gentle warmth, sense of humour, and his love of reading, history, music, travel, sailing, skiing, and curling. Above all, he was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. He leaves behind his beloved wife, Isabelle (née Dupuis); his children, Andrea (Steve) and Andrew (Hannah); his grandchildren, Matthew and Samantha; his brother, John (Susan) and family; his sister, Christine and family; and many dear friends and colleagues.
The family is sincerely grateful to Dr. Rotondo and Dr. Moore for their kindness and compassionate care, as well as to the nurses and personal care workers at the North Bay Regional Health Centre.
Visitation at Hillside Funeral Services, 362 Airport Rd, will be held on Tuesday June 16 from 4 to 8 pm and a service will occur on Wednesday June 17 at 11am at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations to a charity of choice.
