George Renton Obituary

Renton, George Albert (1922-2024)

It is with deep sadness that we announce that our father George passed away peacefully at the North Bay Regional Health Centre on Sunday, January 28th at the grand age of 101.  Predeceased by his beloved wife of 68 years, Anne (nee Matte).  Cherished father of Carole Anne, Christopher (Rhonda), Cynthia and Constance. Grandfather of Julianne and Jill, and great grandfather of Grayson.  Predeceased by parents James and Daisy, and by his siblings James, David, Donald and little Margaret (age 3).

George was born in 1922 in Hespeler, Ontario.  He was raised in Brantford where he attended elementary and secondary school.  In December of 1940, at the age of 18, he enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force and served in both Canada and England until his discharge in January of 1946.  After the war, George came north for a job with the Sudbury Star in purchasing.  It was in Sudbury that he met the love of his life, Anne.  They were married in 1949 and were an inseparable team until our mother’s death in 2017 at the age of 94.  Early in 1957, George and Anne moved to North Bay where George took on a new job as head of customer service with Johns Manville (later Nordfibre).  He worked there until his retirement at the age of 67.

George’s life was centered on his family.  He was a loving and devoted husband, and a wise, gentle father.  He will be remembered for his integrity, his work ethic, his story telling and his funny little dad jokes.  Dad’s death marks the end of an era in our family.  As children, we feel deeply honoured and blessed to have had our parents with us so long.  Our hearts are heavy with loss but we are comforted knowing they are together again in one of the “many dwelling places” in the “Father’s house”.

The family wishes to extend our heartfelt thanks to Father Larry Rhymes, pastor of the Pro Cathedral for his compassion, and to Msgr. Dave Tramontini for his kindness to our parents.  We also thank Dr. Rotondo, the nurses of C3 and the paramedics of the North Bay ambulance service for their compassionate care.

Family will be receiving friends at Hillside Funeral Services, 362 Airport Road on Saturday, February 3rd from 11:00 am until 1:00 pm.  A celebration of his life will follow at 1:00 pm at the funeral home.

Donations in memory of George to the Royal Canadian Legion Poppy Trust Fund would be gratefully acknowledged by his family.

Friends and family have shared their relationship to show their support.
