Joan Hickey

Passed away peacefully at Eastholme on Thursday, February 6th, 2025 at the age of 91. She was predeceased by her husband Michael Hickey and her daughter Michaela.

Joan embraced an adventurous spirit throughout her life. As a young woman, she left England for Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, where she embarked on her teaching career. While there, she met and married her husband Mike, who was stationed with the Royal Canadian Air Force. Following Mike's career, they had notable postings to Belgium and Ottawa before being relocated to North Bay, where they ultimately decided to settle and make their home. In North Bay, Joan taught at Vincent Massey School where she later retired. Together with her husband Mike, they traveled across Canada, the United States, and Europe. They enjoyed exploring by camper van, bike, and scooter. Joan will always be remembered for her passion for literacy and education and for her outstanding dedication to teaching. She will be sadly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.

As per her wishes, there will be no visitation or service. A graveside service will take place at Forest Lawn Cemetery in the spring. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Literacy Nipissing or to the Salvation Army.
