Martha Byrnes Obituary

In loving Memory of Martha Edith Byrnes 1949-2025

Retired Critical Care Nurse, Devoted Sister and Aunt

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Martha Edith Byrnes, a retired nurse from the Critical Care Unit (CCU) whose unwavering dedication to compassionate care touched countless lives. Martha passed away peacefully on September 5, 2025, at North Bay Regional Health Center, surrounded by the love of her family.

Born to Raymond James Byrnes (1919-1995) and Helen Barbara (Doan) Byrnes (1924-1996) in South Porcupine, ON. She was a fiercely independent woman whose strength, grace, and loyalty defined her life. Though she never married, her heart was full of love for her siblings, nieces, nephews, and long-time Nursing community who became her friends. She held a special place in the lives of her sorority sisters of the Beta Sigma Phi Chapter Delta Nu Master, and they in hers.

Throughout her career at the North Bay Regional Health Centre (NBRHC), Martha served in the CCU with unmatched presence, skill, and compassion. Her commitment to helping others live their fullest lives was clear in every patient she cared for and every colleague she mentored and supported. Her legacy lives on in the lives she saved and the hearts she touched.

Martha is survived by her beloved siblings: Richard, Sarah, Christopher, Randolph, and their partners. She was predeceased by her parents, Ray and Barbara, and siblings William Edward James (1943-1949), David Phillip (1951-2012), and Thomas Patrick (1953-2023). Martha’s memory will be cherished by her many nieces and nephews: Liisa & Derek, Jayson, Eryn & Kyleah, Kimberly & Alexander, Kirsten & Richard, Alysha, Brittany & Courtney, along with many great-nieces and nephews. Martha’s extended family and dear friends will never forget the impact of her love for them.

In honor of Martha’s lifelong dedication to nursing and her passion for helping others thrive, the family kindly requests that donations be made to the NBRHC Critical Care and Prenatal Units. These contributions will continue her legacy of care and compassion, supporting the health and well-being of future generations.

A private family celebration was held to remember Martha’s love of life, as per her wishes.

Martha watched over her family with devotion and fierce protectiveness; her family and friends were her world. Martha had a quiet but powerful presence—one that anchored our family with unwavering love, wisdom, and strength. She was the kind of person whose care was felt even in silence, whose support never wavered, and whose love made you feel safe, seen, and valued. Her absence leaves a space that cannot be filled, but her spirit continues to guide us, just as she always did.
