February 22, 1943 to June 25, 2022

It is with sadness that The Sisters of St. Joseph of Sault Ste. Marie announce the death of Sister Sandra Sandberg (Sister M. Perpetua) on Saturday, June 25th, 2022, at St. Joseph’s Motherhouse, North Bay, Ontario.

Sister Sandra (Helen Rita Sandberg) was born in Sudbury, Ontario; the daughter, of Rita Adeline Jones and William Weiko (Bill) Sandberg.  She is predeceased by her parents and brothers Gary and Richard (Rick).  She is survived by her sisters, Lynn Demers (Mike deceased) Donna (Bill Andrews) and Rhonda. She is also survived by many loving nieces, nephews, cousins and cherished friends.

Sister Sandra entered the Congregation of The Sisters of St. Joseph of Sault Ste. Marie on September 2, 1960, from her home parish, St. Pius X, Lively, Ontario. 

Sister Sandra began her ministry journey as a Sister of St. Joseph working in the business office at St. Joseph’s College, North Bay, followed by teaching grades 3,4,5 in Hawk Junction.  She then served as a Commercial teacher at St. Mary’s Academy, North Bay.  These teaching years were fun and academically rewarding both for students and their teacher.

Following Teachers College studies in Thunder Bay, Sister Sandra taught at St. Veronica School Sault Ste. Marie for one year.  From 1971 – 2010 Sister Sandra ministered at several Sudbury Separate Schools most frequently in Kindergarten classes.

After completing her BA degree at Laurentian University, Sudbury, Sister Sandra received certification in Primary Education, Visual Arts, Religious Education as well as a Master’s Degree in Theological Studies.  While teaching, Sister Sandra earned her Principal Qualifications Part Two from Ontario Institute of Studies in Education.

From its inception Sister Sandra was very involved in the Christ The King Charismatic Prayer Group, Sudbury.  She shared her exceptional spiritual gifts with countless people.

In prayer and in person Sister Sandra was present to all God’s people…a companion on their journey. (Hebrews 12:1) this was her greatest gift to family, Sisters and students.

Sister Sandra’s body will be received at St. Joseph’s Motherhouse at 2:00 pm Sunday, July 3, 2022. Evening Prayer Service at 4:00 p.m.

Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at 11:00 am, Monday July 4, 2022.  Burial will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery, North Bay.

During this public health care crisis, attendance at Visitation and Funeral Liturgy requires proof of vaccination and masks.
