Sister Shannon Hickey

October 8, 1947 – May 26, 2020

It is with deep sadness that the Sisters of St. Joseph of Sault Ste. Marie announce the sudden death of Sister Shannon Hickey, on Tuesday, May 26, 2020 at St. Joseph’s Motherhouse, North Bay, Ontario.

Sister Shannon, the third of seven children was born to the late Esther (Finan) Hickey and Edmund Hickey, October 8, 1947, in Sudbury, Ontario.   She is survived by her sisters Colleen (John Huskinson), Mary Regan, and her brothers David (Alain) and Erin.  She was predeceased by her brothers Michael, Terry, and infants Ryan and Joseph.

Sister Shannon entered the congregation of The Sisters of St. Joseph of Sault Ste. Marie, September 3, 1967, from her beloved Holy Trinity Parish, Sudbury, Ontario.   Shannon’s family home was located in the ‘Donovan’, Sudbury, Ontario.  It was here and at her parish that the seeds of vocation and religious life were first planted and nourished.

Sister Shannon was a woman of prayer, joy and welcome.  She embraced everyone who came into her presence with kindness and blessing.

Shannon began her years of service as a Sister of St. Joseph in 1967, as secretary at St. Joseph’s College, North Bay, for the Leadership Team, followed by ministry service in Callander, at CFB North Bay and at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Little Current, Ontario.

Shannon joined the Parish Ministry Team at Precious Blood Cathedral, Sault Ste. Marie in 1976.   It was in Sault Ste. Marie that Shannon served for the next thirty-four years at Precious Blood Cathedral and Good Counsel Parish.  Shannon celebrated the gift of a sabbatical taking this opportunity to study in Spokane, Washington, at the Credo Institute and enjoyed the ‘gift’ of a pilgrimage to the Holy Land.

Sister Shannon will be remembered for her availability and ministry of kindness, care and support to seniors, nursing home residents, the lonely, the bereaved, and to members of the Sisters of St. Joseph Associate program.

Shannon was delighted to celebrate her 40th year as a member of the CWL – Catholic Women’s League.

Shannon retired to the Motherhouse in 2011 where she continued daily to give witness to living life to the full with ‘joy’ and dedication to her ministry of prayer and presence.

During these unprecedented times, it is with regret that the Sisters of St. Joseph will not have a public funeral liturgy.  A private service will be held and a Celebration of Sister Shannon’s life will be scheduled at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the works and ministries of The Sisters of St. Joseph of Sault Ste. Marie would be appreciated.

Sister Shannon Rest In Peace.
